History has been made overnight, with NASA successfully launching a rocket from the Northern Territory outback.

Troublesome winds had caused the countdown to be aborted several times and the lift-off was delayed by around two hours.The rocket will travel 300km into space, carrying precision instruments that will give scientists new data on the evolution of the cosmos.Another two rockets will blast off from the Northern Territory on July 4 and July 12.The local Yolngu people helped build Arnhem Space Centre, which is owned by Equatorial Launch Australia, on their land.

Gumatj Corporation chairman Djawa Yunupingu says the space industry can provide opportunities for the Aboriginal community.
