Australian workers contemplating a career change in 2025 might find greater success if they strategically time their job search . A recent seasonality report from Seek, a prominent job-listing platform, has revealed the periods throughout the year when employers are most actively seeking new talent and when applicants face less competition. According to Blair Chapman, Seek's senior economist, August consistently emerges as a prime time for job seekers.
'August is a particularly good time to search for a new role,' Chapman explained to 7NEWS.com.au, noting that total job advertisements on Seek peak every August since 2016, excluding the years impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. 'Additionally, there have historically been around 5 percent fewer applications per ad in August and September than on average across the year due to the increased supply of available jobs, meaning candidates are also competing with fewer jobseekers for a role.'Chapman further highlighted that May typically witnesses a surge in job advertisements following an April dip. This seasonal trend, he suggests, is influenced by the new financial year, during which governments and businesses evaluate their staffing needs. Performance reviews and payouts often coincide with this period, leading to employee departures and vacant positions. Conversely, April can be a less favorable time to recruit due to the Easter holidays and school breaks. 'Similarly, the increase in job ads in May typically comes after a trough in April, which can be a more difficult time to recruit new employees due to the Easter period and the school holidays, which typically fall during this time,' he stated.While summer holidays generally present a 'tricky period' for job seekers, with advertised roles typically at their lowest in December and applications peaking in January, Chapman emphasized that certain industries exhibit unique patterns. For instance, sales job advertisements tend to peak in January, while retail and consumer products follow a distinct seasonal pattern with elevated job ads between August and November, aligning with the pre-peak retail sales hiring surge. In contrast, industries experiencing consistent and growing demand, such as healthcare and medical, show less variation between peak months and the average. Career coach Matilda Gilfillan offered valuable tips for job seekers aiming to capitalize on these seasonal trends. 'When applying for a job, you will stand out by tailoring your resume and cover letter to the selection criteria of the job,' she advised 7NEWS.com.au. 'It sounds so simple but many get this part wrong. Think quality applications, not quantity.' Furthermore, she encouraged job seekers to follow up applications with a call, showcasing enthusiasm and asking insightful questions to demonstrate their employability beyond the resume. For those progressing to the interview stage, Gilfillan recommended using specific examples from professional experience to answer questions, highlighting their individual contributions and outcomes. Finally, she urged unsuccessful candidates to maintain a positive outlook, seek feedback, and nurture professional relationships, recognizing the importance of networking in career development
