Young farmers say the next 10 years will see a major transfer of land ownership to a new, educated, and business-savvy generation focused on sustainable, organic opportunities.

"What we're taught at university is a very agrochemical, industrial way of farming: synthetic fertilisers, lots of chemicals is best practice," she said.It was a significant change for the 2,000-hectare property, but the decision was not just about cutting out chemicals, it was also driven by the market."We're looking at more extreme climates that we're working in and how our systems can foster a sustainable, profitable business.

Ms McConnel said there was also a significant number of people from non-farming backgrounds that had taken up careers in agriculture. After studying commerce and communications, fourth-generation cattleman Bryce Camm returned to run his family's cattle and cropping property near Dalby, 200 kilometres west of Brisbane."But I think the reality is that Australian agriculture in particular has a great opportunity, both now and in front of it."The Camm family supply local and export markets, and they have largely been unaffected by the impact of COVID-19 outbreaks in the southern states.
