CINCINNATI, Ohio — A southwest Ohio man who describes himself as an “incel” could be sentenced to life in prison after he admitted Tuesday in federal court to plotting a mass shooting of women at a university in the state.
Tres Genco, 22, of Hillsboro, pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in Cincinnati to one count of attempting to commit a hate crime, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio. Because it involved an attempt to kill, it is punishable by up to life in prison. Prosecutors describe the incel movement, or “involuntary celibate,” as an online community of predominantly males who harbor anger toward women. Incels advocate violence in support of their belief that women unjustly deny them sexual or romantic attention to which they believe they are entitled.
