Police in northern NSW have been called to several large house parties in recent days, including one with more than 1000 people.

Last week Byron Shire Mayor Simon Richardson pleaded with people to maintain social distancing after there had been big gatherings in the area. “I get that there’s a strong temptation to let your hair down a bit, especially if you’re here for some relaxing and getting away from what has been a really stressful year, but I ask that we all put the safety of the whole community first,” he told the“As we’ve seen in Victoria, there is no room for complacency, and we all have to do our bit.”
Busking permits are banned in Byron until the end of the month so people do not gather in the streets.People on social media said the partygoers should have been fined.“The current message seems to be that it’s OK, because on the first offence, you’ll only get a warning.”People face a maximum penalty of $11,000, or six months imprisonment, for breaching the Public Health Act.
Wayne Jones, head of the Northern NSW Local Health District, said officials were “absolutely dumbfounded” at the gatherings.
