Opinion: Sen. Umberg carries water for Big Labor
Public sector unions have long been a dominant force in shaping politics and policy in California. Every election cycle, from local offices to Congress, these unions play a critical role in getting their favored politicians elected. Most disturbingly, public employee unions frequently play a decisive role in electing those with whom they will negotiate their next contract and who will provide oversight over government operations.
At the state level, teachers unions ensure that policies that most Californians support never get a fair hearing by spending heavily to get only lawmakers who follow their orders into the state Legislature. Meanwhile, government unions actively work to block any meaningful government reform and undermine the ability of government agencies to contract out for services.
This includes former Asm. Lorena Gonzalez’s infamous Assembly Bill 5 to destroy independent contracting, as well as Asm. Chris Holden’s efforts to destroy the fast-food restaurant sector on behalf of unions eager to control the sector.
