Senate to sweat over hot topic as it probes menopause

As Gen-X women push for menopause to be a more visible part of working life, a Senate inquiry will probe its impact on women’s health and finances.

The impact of menopause on women’s health, finances, careers and wellbeing will be probed by a new inquiry tasked with telling the federal government how it can improve access to treatment and workplace policies.

Access to health services will also be probed, as will the affordability of treatments such as hormone replacement therapy, awareness among medical professionals and workplace policies.Greens senator Larissa Waters, who will move to establish the inquiry when parliament resumes next week, said people suffering physically or mentally debilitating symptoms had typically suffered in silence and deserved better policies.

“We also need more awareness both by GPs and by patients of the symptoms of perimenopause and menopause, so that people know what treatments are available to them, and make them affordable.
