Margrethe’s 50-year reign now makes her Europe’s longest-serving monarch following the September 8 death of Elizabeth, 96, who ruled for 70 years.Credit:Out of respect for the late British monarch, Margrethe had asked her court to adjust the program for her own half-century anniversary commemorations which had been planned for 10-11 September. Among the events cancelled at short notice was an appearance on the Amalienborg Palace balcony to greet well-wishers and a ride in a horse-drawn carriage through Copenhagen. Margrethe was proclaimed Queen on January 15, 1972, a day after her father, King Frederik IX, died following a short illness. After Princess Mary was uninvited from the Queen’s funeral, the British Foreign Office reportedly issued a “profound” apology to the Danish royals. Denmark's Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary were originally both announced as attending the funeral.A spokesperson declared Mary’s invitation was an “error”, as heads of state were permitted to bring only one guest - although the Netherlands and Spain were allowed three attendees. The foreign office apologised via the Danish Embassy for the “regrettable error” due to sending 2000 invitations in such a short time, a spokesperson told Danish news outlet BT. “There has been a regrettable error in the invitation from the British Foreign Office’s protocol,” they said. “It is thus only the Queen and the Crown Prince who, from the Danish side, will participate in Queen Elizabeth II’s state funeral on Monday.“The FCDO has passed on their profound apologies to the Danish Royal Household through the Danish Embassy,” the statement said. Despite the purported limit of two guests, the Netherlands was represented by King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima as well as the king’s mother Princess Beatrix. Representing Spain was King Felipe VI and Queen Letizia along with the former king Juan Carlos I and his wife Sofia.
