Senior SAS soldier denies Roberts-Smith war crime claims ‘swept under rug’ | MWhitbourn
for defamation over a series of stories in 2018 that he says portray him as a war criminal who was involved in the unlawful killing of Afghan detainees.
The media outlets have called SAS witnesses who have alleged Roberts-Smith killed one unarmed detainee during a mission to a compound dubbed Whiskey 108 in 2009 and directed a “rookie” soldier to kill a second prisoner, after the Afghans emerged from a tunnel.They have also called witnesses who say Roberts-Smith kicked an unarmed Afghan detainee off a cliff in 2012 before the man was shot dead.
He denied that it was his view in 2013 that he did not want to report any allegation unless he was satisfied himself that it was true. He said he was not aware of the war crimes allegations until 2020. He said that he was made aware in 2013 of allegations Roberts-Smith had bullied or assaulted former soldiers and followed up on those reports.
