Serena Williams's quest to equal Margaret Court for the most major singles titles has begun in impressive-enough fashion at the Australian Open, while Naomi Osaka's championship defence started positively following a straight-sets win on day one at Melbourne Park.
The American took 19 minutes to claim the opening set but the second proved more of a contest, with the 18-year-old Potapova settling her nerves with an early break of serve.
