Seth Meyers Finally Got the Top Late-Night Emmy Nomination—Only After Breaking All the Rules of the Format

is already an Emmy winner—for original music and lyrics, of all things, for a monologue from his 13-year run as a writer and performer onhas been nominated for its share of Emmys as well, until this year the big one—outstanding variety talk series—remained frustratingly elusive, even as Meyers and his writing staff shook up the talk-show format and earned a devoted fan base for their efforts.

Now he and his team have that overdue nomination, and it’s not by accident—when we caught up with Meyers last week, he was catching up from what he described as “the super-thirsty first round” of interviews that preceded the 2022 Emmy nominations. That all happened just a couple of weeks beforeepisode tapings. “It’s shameful to say, but it kind of was my summer vacation,” Meyers admits. “It was five days at the end of a porch while I read books, and my kids weren’t allowed to come near me.

Those are the days where it’s hardest, just trying to find any light based on how terrible events have been. But, on a normal day, I think we enjoy trying to present the news, and add jokes in a way that will be pleasant for us to do, and for people to watchis a segment that acknowledges your various privileges in a sly, lighthearted way. The premise is that Jenny Hagel and Amber Ruffin write the jokes, but presumably you get involved at some point before you shoot it.

It’s less collaborative than you think. They really do write them. I think they have also now invited the whole writing staff to write jokes Seth can’t tell. In the beginning, the catalyst for the whole sketch was Jenny writing jokes that were definitely for a lesbian to say. Despite having the same haircut as many famous lesbians, it did not strike me that it would be appropriate for me to do it. We would laugh, and Jenny appreciated it too.

That segment is just one of many that put your writers on camera, which doesn’t happen that much on late-night shows. Was there a strategic plan behind making them characters in their own right, or did it metastasize outward from letting the world know about
