Cricket's broadcast rights battle appears set to head to an independent arbitrator, as Seven West Media remains determined to raise the stakes in its dispute with Cricket Australia | Pierik_AgeSport
Sources at Seven on Monday insisted it was ready to lodge an official application at the Australian Chamber for International and Commercial Arbitration on Tuesday, seeking an independent and binding call on whether its annual fee of $75 million in cash should be cut over its claims the coming season lacked the "quality" it had originally expected.
Seven and Foxtel have argued the season ahead lacks the quality they had anticipated when CA's original schedule was published in July and what is defined under the terms of their contracts in part because of the fall out of COVID-19. Broadcast sources speculate Seven wants a financial cut of at least 40 per cent – or about $30 million.Should, as expected, the arbitration application be lodged, the chamber will nominate an expert although CA has the right to refuse any involvement.
Seven has already sought its own independent analysis and now has a cash figure of what it believes it should pay this summer. But much to its frustration, CA refused to get involved in this earlier process, even knocking back five independent experts Seven had suggested who could do the job. Despite the grievances, Seven is fulfilling its contract, including televising the ongoing women's white-ball series between Australia and New Zealand.
