Before this year's Archibald finalists are announced, we speak to a former finalist about all things portraiture — from choosing a sitter to adding the final touches.
Archibald Prize season is upon us. It's the nation's most prestigious and recognisable portrait prize, awarded annually to the tune of $100,000.
"A great sitter is someone who is willing to give you a good chunk of their time so that you can sit together throughout the portrait process, but also someone who's really collaborative because the process of painting a portrait is a two-way street," says Leutwyler. Leutwyler was selected as a finalist in the 2022 Archibald Prize for her portrait of Shane Jenek, aka Courtney Act."I generally meet someone or see someone out in the world who I think is doing really incredible work for the queer community or , just by being visible and wonderful and authentic, I'm really drawn to."
"It can be anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour-and-a-half, and a lot of that time is spent sketching my sitter, while also chatting to them and getting to know them a little bit better and understanding how they would like to be portrayed."During the sitting, it's helpful to take reference photos and discuss different poses with your sitter. Encourage them to bring a few outfits so you can try out different looks.
Before putting paint on canvas, it's crucial to prepare your workspace lighting and mix the colours you plan to use. "I will then start to compare that to the photo references that I initially took and the sketches from our initial sitting, and make tiny little tweaks that tighten the jawline or bring the eye up … and just creating those adjustments to get it closer to real life, but without trying to attempt photorealism
"Once I've got that underpainting to a place that I'm happy with, I will layer in glazes bring the skin to life a little bit more or deepen certain hues bring colour into their skin."As your portrait progresses, you may want to bring your sitter back into your studio for adjustments. At the very least, bring your sitter in for a final sitting when your portrait is nearing completion.
