Severe thunderstorms are making their way to south-east Queensland this Christmas Eve after forming over the Carnarvon Range and the Scenic Rim, the Bureau of Meteorology says.

The BOM says the convergence of an upper trough in the south-east and a surface trough from the west will potentially bring damaging winds, heavy rainfall and large hailstones.BOM senior forecaster Gabriel Branescu said rain would start falling later this afternoon, with the heaviest downpours starting in the early evening."Some shower activity will continue into Christmas Day tomorrow in the south-east.

A stronger storm cell over the Gold Coast will bring up to 100 millimetres of rain, before moving north to the Sunshine Coast hinterland.
