The severe thunderstorm watch runs until 8 p.m. in most areas with heavy rain, flooding, wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail expected.
A severe thunderstorm watch has been issued for all of New Jersey’s 21 counties as a cold front expected to deliver downpours and gusty winds of up to 70 mph pushes toward the state on Monday.
Severe thunderstorm warnings are likely to follow as stronger storms develop in the late afternoon and early evening. The National Weather Service has canceled the severe thunderstorm watch for Sussex and Warren counties, along with five counties in eastern Pennsylvania: Berks, Carbon, Lehigh, Monroe and Northampton. Forecasters say the threat of severe storms in those areas is not as high as it had been earlier, but strong thunderstorms still could pop up Monday evening.
When a severe thunderstorm watch is issued, people should be aware of the possibility of strong storms on the way. A warning is more urgent than a watch.Forecasters are also concerned about scattered hail up to the size of ping pong balls, potential tornadoes and flash flooding. The storms could also trigger power outages across New Jersey.
Rain is already falling in parts of North Jersey at 1:30 p.m., and some hail was reported in Sussex County.
