Sewage was discharged into official bathing hotspots across England and Wales 21,000 times last year, according to new statistics.
Seaside tourist towns were among the worst hit, with the swimming waters of Morecombe Bay, in the north-west, polluted with 9,287 hours of sewage spills. The analysis found that Bognor Regis and Lyme Regis were the worst affected areas on the south coast. Bathing spots in Lyme Regis were hit by 1,579 hours of sewage discharge from Southern Water, while 1,492 hours of sewage was discharged into swimming areas in Bognor Regis by South West Water.
