It is unclear if defining 120 as “sex buyers” meant that the remaining misdemeanors were for “sex sellers.” Available court records for six of the felony defendants charged with attempting to solicit sex from minors and adults show that they were all men, ranging in age from 19 to 60 years old. All were locals, living in Arizona.
Arlene Mahoney, executive director at Southwest Recovery Alliance a non-profit organization focused on HCV and HIV prevention and elimination, explained that “conflating sex trafficking with sex work confuses the public, who already may or may not have negative views around sex workers.”
