A lawyer whose experience of sexual harassment prompted the dismissal of a South Australian magistrate doubts the findings of a second review of the legal profession will spark immediate change.
A lawyer whose experience of sexual harassment led to the dismissal of a magistrate is doubtful a second review into the legal profession will lead to change.Lawyer Alice Bitmead , whose experience of sexual harassment led to the dismissal of a magistrate, is doubtful a second review into the culture of South Australia 's legal profession will lead to change.
Ms Bitmead now works at the Working Women's Centre in Adelaide, where she provides legal advice to women who experience sexual harassment at work.Supplied: Alice BitmeadShe told ABC News that in the past year, she had provided formal advice to about six women who worked in the legal profession, and had spoken to several more informally.
More than half of the 600 legal professionals who responded to an anonymous online survey reported experiencing sexual harassment, discrimination or bullying at work in the past three years."Harassment in all its forms persists," Ms Carney wrote.Ms Bitmead said she was not surprised by the review's findings.
While Ms Carney noted "some positive movement" since the 2021 review, she wrote that progress had not been achieved "on the scale hoped". SA Law Society President Marissa Mackie urged all legal professionals to "reflect on their own workplace conduct and actively contribute to a culture of respect and safety".
"While some surveyed participants noted that the legal profession today is a far better place to be than it has been in decades past, the continuation of harassment on any level — especially in this profession — is simply not good enough," he said. But Ms Bitmead said it was "difficult to feel optimistic about a great deal of change because of the nature of the profession".
