MLB rosters decrease to 26 players Monday, and the Giants also have 8 players on the mend who are due back soon.
SAN FRANCISCO — Every team in the majors is facing a roster crunch come Monday, when the number of active players allowed is reduced from 28 to 26, but the Giants will be tasked with more difficult decisions than most.
Cobb will start Sunday, manager Gabe Kapler confirmed prior to Saturday’s game. That means the Giants will have to make a corresponding move to transfer him to the active roster from the 10-day injured list. Cobb’s addition would give the Giants 15 pitchers on their staff, so expect another pitcher to be sent out. The likeliest options are Mauricio Llovera, Kervin Castro and Yunior Marte.
Yastrzemski is back in San Francisco, awaiting negative results from two PCR tests 24 hours apart before he can rejoin the Giants. It’s possible he could be active for the Giants’ series in Los Angeles, while Belt is further away from returning, even if that’s within the next week.
