Traded to the Mets and DFA’d after spring training, Darin Ruf was back in the Giants’ lineup Wednesday night.

SAN FRANCISCO — In between hugs and hellos and how’ve you beens, Darin Ruf arrived at his locker in the Giants clubhouse Wednesday afternoon. Almost a year to date since he was on the move in their season-opening win in 2022, some seven months since he was surprisingly sent on the move to New York, and two weeks since his brief tenure there came to an unceremonious end, Ruf was back where he wanted to be all along, with the Giants in San Francisco.

Ruf played in 11 spring training games with the Mets, hitting .167/.265/.233 in 30 at-bats. He was limited by arthritis in his wrist but received a cortisone shot that he said helped the issue that had been bothering him for a few years. Since signing a minor-league deal with the Giants on Saturday, Ruf said he had gotten about 10 at-bats in extended spring training games in Arizona, which manager Gabe Kapler said were “really quality plate appearances.

In 28 games with the Mets, Ruf batted .152/.216/.197 and became the frequent scorn of the passionate New York fanbase. It took only four days from the time he signed with the Giants for them to select him to their roster and insert him into their lineup, a speed even Ruf was said was quicker than he imagined. But after Kershaw on Wednesday, the Giants have two more left-handers scheduled to start against them in Detroit and potentially two more in Miami, which also features a lefty-heavy bullpen.
