Haniger (forearm) estimated to return around last week of August; expect to see much more of 21-year-old rookie Luis Matos in the meantime.
LOS ANGELES — Mitch Haniger is expected to be out until at least late August, so expect to see more of 21-year-old rookie Luis Matos roaming the Giants’ outfield.
The 10-week timeline would place Haniger’s return around the last week of August, though as manager Gabe Kapler reminded reporters before Friday’s series opener against the Dodgers, it is merely an estimate. That means the Giants should get a long look at Matos, who debuted Wednesday in St. Louis and was back in center field Friday under the bright lights of Dodger Stadium. While shying away from deeming it an everyday role, Kapler said Matos is “going to see the field quite a bit and get quite a bit of opportunity.”
