How did Sam Long turn into Sammy? Actually, it’s a funny story. The name isn’t the only thing he changed over the offseason.
GOODYEAR, Ariz. — It’s Sam, not Sammy. And the last two letters of his first name aren’t all that Sam Long ditched over the offseason.
“It’s the best my changeup has felt going into a year,” Long said. “I can just trust the three pitches and focus on executing those three. I know those three pitches are good enough to get guys out.” Long figures to fill a similar role to last season, when he worked just about every situation imaginable on a major-league pitching staff. He started five games and finished two. In 12 games last season, Long managed to make at least one appearance in every inning — one through nine.“Especially after what a crazy year it was for me last year, it was nice to kind of hit the reset button,” Long said.
“It just kind of stuck,” Long said. “They announced my name in my debut and I looked back like, oh, it’s Sammy, here we go.”
