RHP Jakob Junis signed a 1-year, $1.75 million deal to add depth and flexibility to Giants’ staff.
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — A few seats down from Carlos Rodón, there was another newly made nameplate hanging above a locker in the Giants clubhouse Monday morning, when it opened to reporters for the first time in two seasons.
Junis had a 5.26 ERA in 16 appearances — six starts — for the Royals last season and has never bested the 4.30 mark from his rookie season. But in San Francisco, he sees an organization that can potentially transform his career, as it has for others under the leadership of pitching coach Andrew Bailey and the rest of its staff.
Junis’ ERA last season was unremarkable, but a metric that looks at the factors under a pitcher’s control — xFIP, or expected fielding independent pitching — shows more promise, manager Gabe Kapler said. In that category, which is measured like ERA, Junis posted a 3.88 mark last year, the best of his career.
