Shadow attorney-general Julian Leeser will resign from the opposition cabinet after the Liberal Party resolved to oppose the Voice to parliament referendum in a move that bound frontbenchers

“Because I intend to campaign for a yes vote I have resigned from the shadow ministry,” Leeser wrote. Leeser’s support for the concept of an Indigneous Voice to Parliament pre-dates his entry into federal Parliament, having worked with Indigenous leaders Noel Pearson, Marcia Langton and Megan Davis on early concepts and founded the Uphold and Recognise organisation to build support for constitutional recognition in conservative circles.

Noel Pearson delivers ‘low blow’ toward Julian Leeser’s Jewish faithThe Voice to Parliament campaign has brought out Noel Pearson’s “inner bully” after a “deliberate low blow” toward Shadow Indigenous Affairs Minister Julian Leeser’s Jewish faith, Sky News host Peta Credlin claims. Mr Pearson questioned whether Mr Leeser wants people to wear a tattoo identifying them as Indigenous or “our clothes should be adorned with some kind of badge identifying us as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander”. “This was a clear reference to what the Nazis did to Jews – the Star of David on their clothing, and of course, later in the death camps, the tattooed numbers on arms,” Ms Credlin said. “It was a calculated attack of carefully chosen words, a deliberate low blow directed at Leeser who is a proud man of Jewish faith.” Ms Credlin said it should be possible to debate the Voice to Parliament without getting “nasty”.
