Shadow climate change and energy minister Ted O’Brien has called on the Albanese government to rescind its declaration creating an offshore wind zone in the Hunter region, following persistent protests from local communities.
There has been a heavy backlash against the federal government and energy minister Chris Bowen over their July declaration for an area in the Pacific Ocean, off the Hunter region in New South Wales, to be used for offshore wind development.

Picture: Getty Images "This is a community that relies on industries like tourism and also commercial fishing. The tourism is worth up to $660 million a year. Commercial fisheries are around $350 million. This is their livelihoods.”
Chants such as “Bugger off Bowen, the wind farm’s going” were roared by the crowd that is “enraged” about the wind farm plans. “This community is enraged by this because it’s happened without their knowledge – and those few who did know about it – they were ignored by the minister. This is why I don’t think the declaration holds water.”
