Shadow environment minister Jonathon Duniam has slammed his Labor counterpart for “killing” the $1 billion Regis Resources gold mine project in rural NSW.

Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek sought advice from the Wiradjuri/Wiradyuri people before she invoked Section 10 of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Heritage Protection Act to grant a protection order for a dam site near Blayney in western NSW .

“The fact that this company had gone through five years of federal and state environmental and planning approvals, jumped through every hoop and got the project across the line, only to be stopped at the 11th hour under this piece of legislation - the ATSIHP Act - I think is a travesty,” Mr Duniam said.

Backing in the Premier was Prime Minister Anthony Albanese who said he wanted to see the project “go ahead” as there was “nothing to stop it”. The shadow environment minister said the details surrounding Ms Plibersek’s decision had not come to the fore, with the proponent of the gold mine also being left in the dark.

“Whereas this crowd, have gone and engaged in a confidential process outside of all the other processes available to them and, have killed this proposal off,” Mr Duniam added.
