The Northern Territory senator says youth crime in the Alice and other parts of NT has risen due to the circumstances children are being brought up in.
Shadow Indigenous Affairs Minister Jacinta Nampijinpa Price says Alice Springs curfew is working but is not the answer to youth crime
"This is an issue that I think progressed from Alice Springs and certainly occurring right throughout the territory in terms of youth crime."The comments come as NT Chief Minister Eva Lawler said she would be in Alice Springs to consider extending the curfew beyond April 10 and past the end of school holidays on April 14.
"They would be picked up by police and returned to a responsible adult, but we don't know what actually defines a responsible adult. This led her to repeat her previous calls for Indigenous children in the NT to be removed from those circumstances."This has occurred largely because of the fact that Indigenous children in the Northern Territory aren't necessarily removed from dysfunctional circumstances," she said.
With a federal election looming in the next 18 months, and the senator looking like she would be the Coalition pick for the Indigenous Affairs portfolio, she was asked what she would invest in, but she remained reasonably coy, suggesting an audit would provide the best knowledge base.
