Follow live: A star-studded service in memory of Australian cricket great Shane Warne is being held at the MCG
Keith Warne ended his tribute on behalf of the Warne family with some heart-breaking words:
“What Shane achieved on the field was unimaginable but for his mother and myself but it was the things Shane did away from the cricket field we will hold up as his finest achievements,” Keith said. “This was never more evident than when he visited King Lake in Victoria after many lives were lost and the town had been devastated by bushfires back in February 2009. Shane appreciated how horrific the situation was. He was hoping his visit would help lift the community spirit.
Kerr said as a boy he was at the MCG for the Boxing Day Test when Warne was quickly dismissed while batting. The service has started with a moment of silence and an introductory video with some special moments in Warne’s career including his 700th wicket and audio of the crowd chanting “Warnie, Warnie”.Shane Warne fans have begun to pour into the MCG where a documentary about the cricket great’s life will be played ahead of the memorial service.
Ms Carter-Bell said she had met Warne at a cafe 15 years ago and had been inspired by the cricketer’s never-give-up attitude.“He’s with my mummy now.”Commentator Mark Howard told Fox Sports that Jackson Warne hopes the night is a celebration for his father.Brooke Warne and Jackson Warne, children of Shane Warne, are seen during the AFL round one match between St Kilda and Collingwood at Marvel Stadium this week.
