Shane Warne was many things to many people. To cricket fans, he was the sultan of spin – a sporting genius with an unmatched ability to obliterate opponents with the flick of a wrist. No spin: Reading the seemingly unfiltered thoughts of a living legend was a thrill. But there’s another facet to Warnie that captured so many of our imaginations. And that was his mastery of social media.
To me, Shane shone brightest on Instagram. A large part of his appeal was his willingness to interact with fans and include everyone in the joke, especially when it was at his expense. He was no stranger to selfies, often posting them and encouraging his followers to “caption” them. He invited sledges in the name of banter, cultivating a community of fans who’d wisecrack with one another as though they were right there alongside him in the cricket commentary box.
Warnie was shorthand for punching darts, eating Maccas and partying all night long. The fact he just so happened to be one of Australia’s most infamous national treasures was largely irrelevant. He was a larrikin of the highest order, the kind that my generation has never, and maybe will never, see.He and I formed a funny little connection over the years. I posted about him weekly for upwards of a half decade in an effort to become his wife.
