Rates for owners who operate entire homes as short stay accommodation in Tasmania's capital city will soon pay double after a vote was passed by the council.
A 8-3 vote was passed on Monday by the council to adopt a new rating system, which hikes rates for owners of short stay properties such as Airbnb, as well owners of vacant residential land. The Hobart City Council has doubled rates for properties used a short stay accommodation. Picture: Linda Higginson.
Hobart Lord Mayor Anna Reynolds spoke to the media on Tuesday and said it was a"sensible approach" for the council to differentiate rates on different types of properties. However some say property owners have been targeted, including Airbnb who declares the move will hurt ratepayers during a time when Tasmanians are already doing it tough following consecutive interest rate rises.
