A new seawall, designed to last 100 years or more, was built to replace the old structure which was severely damaged in a storm in 2016.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service closed Shark Beach in early 2022, after its 100-year-old seawall was damaged in a storm six years earlier. "The weather has been a big issue at the site, the heavy rain in 2022 and 2023 was not helpful," he said.ABC News: Danuta Kozaki"To our surprise we did find asbestos when construction started. The old seawall was built in the 1930s, it took a long time to remove it from the site properly."
