Shark Beach to shut out swimmers until December | ameliamcguiree
Swimmers will be locked out of one of Sydney Harbour’s iconic beaches for most of the year when it closes next month for extensive refurbishment.
Overseen by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service, the plans for the wall include creating a wheelchair-accessible ramp to the beach, better stair access, an increased lawn and promenade area as well a new irrigation system, and an increased number of planted trees. Member for Vaucluse Gabrielle Upton said the ‘once in a lifetime’ renovation would address the wall’s safety issues, and improve the access to and amenity of Shark Beach. She thanked the community for their patience while these ‘necessary’ works are undertaken.
Mr Drakopoulos is taking the shutdown of his restaurant and kiosks as an opportunity to launch his own extensive renovation to ‘match the fantastic new seawall with a revamped restaurant’. Mr Darkopoulos said he was grateful the National Park delayed the construction until after summer, and argued that locals should focus on the fact that they will be welcomed back to a safer beach in December.
