abc.net.au/news/shark-frenzy-off-hervey-bay-humpback-whale/102528388About 50 tiger sharks have been captured on video feeding on the remains of a humpback whale off Hervey Bay, about 250 kilometres north of Brisbane.A marine researcher says the large amount of sharks is a sign of a healthy ecosystemQueensland Park and Wildlife Service rangers witnessed the feeding frenzy when they found the whale — believed to have died from natural causes — between Woody Island and Booral on Sunday afternoon.
Researcher associate at Pacific Whale Foundation Barry McGovern said it was encouraging to see so many sharks in the area."When you've got a top predator like [sharks] in such big numbers, you know you've got a healthy ecosystem. "If it wasn't for them, we'd have dead animals washing up on our beaches, so they're doing exactly what they should be."This whale is the fifth to be found dead in Wide Bay waters in the last two weeks."We had been getting images of that whale moving down the coast the last couple of days," he said.Rangers say about 50 sharks were surrounding the dead whale.
