SAN JOSE – The Sharks’ average announced attendance for home games this season has been among the lowest among all American teams in the NHL, but the team’s president is optimistic more fans will return to SAP Center as COVID-19 cases continue to decrease and local health restrictions begin to ease.
Oftentimes, the actual crowd size appears to be much smaller than the announced amount of tickets sold. Prior to the latest ordinance, which went into effect earlier this month, all visitors to the arena ages 3 and older were required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with either two doses of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccine or one dose of Johnson & Johnson. If not vaccinated, patrons had to show proof of a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours of the event.
Average announced attendance at Sharks games had slowly decreased from 17,508 in 2016-17 to 17,266 in 2018-19, which was the last season the team made the NHL playoffs. Of the last eight home games before Thursday, only two – Jan. 15 vs. the Pittsburgh Penguins and the Jan. 22 game with Tampa Bay – had announced more than 12,000 tickets sold. The other six dates had announced attendance figures between 10,489 and 11,513.
