COMMENT: 'I wanted to see the real America. My children, though, had other ideas.'
This was to be no by-the-numbers trip. In my mind's eye I had pictured our American adventure as a combination of Jack Kerouac's, but with fewer murders. I saw us hurtling along the Extra-terrestrial Highway in a fire-apple red Chevy; top down, the wind in our hair, pulling over at greasy-spoon diners and shootin' the breeze with simple folk in trucker hats and sassy waitresses who chewed gum and recommended pie.
More importantly, my dream of bisecting the USA in a convertible, Hunter S. Thompson-style, was off the table and instead we would be making the journey by conventional passenger jet. Instead of Las Vegas to Stumpy Point, North Carolina via Atlanta, we would be taking a direct flight from San Francisco to New York City; and rather than sleeping under the stars and eating peyote, we would be staying in hotels and ordering room service.
The Hook & Ladder 8 fire station, the location of Ghostbusters HQ. Perhaps the most significant landmark in New York City.Just as Scrooge learned the true meaning of Christmas after being taken on a journey by three ghosts, I hoped our three children would learn the same lesson on their journey with us. I explained my hope to my wife as she packed our bags the next morning. She couldn't quite follow my logic and told me to fix up the bill and arrange a cab for the airport.
