She entered Parliament three weeks after giving birth - now her daughter sits the HSC | natassiazc

NSW Nationals politician Melinda Pavey remembers trying not to wake her sleeping toddler, Emily, every time she snuck out of her Coffs Harbour home at 5.45am to catch an early flight to Sydney for parliamentary sitting days.

Melinda Pavey, currently the longest serving Nationals MP, was sworn into Parliament three weeks after giving birth to daughter Emily, who turned 18 last month.Pavey remembers singing the song to her in the bath, with its lyrics:"She just looked at me – she had tears streaming from her eyes – and said, 'I don't like that song. Stop singing it, it makes me sad'. We don't play that song any more," she says.

"It was my choice, a choice I made when I was pregnant," Pavey says. "I had a lot of [entitlements] available to me that a lot of working mothers never do ... so I never treated it as 'woe is me'. I missed a lot of school presentations, all the school report days used to clash with parliamentary sittings. But my husband was there."
