For weeks the 63-year-old had been watching the Hillville fire burn in the distance from her Johns River farm, 45 kilometres south of Port Macquarie.
"On the second call, just seven minutes later, she said the fire had hit the house ... then the phone went dead." "I think the decision to leave was very hard for her. Whatever happened that day was so sudden, she couldn't get out," Mrs Gerrand said. "Sadly, it has had a profound impact on me as I try to recover from the the bushfire of last November ... it comes on top of the trauma we have endured since last November."
Amid the trauma of losing her sister and helping the land to heal, Mrs Gerrand said her focus was not on "recovery," but on "a sort of renewal".
