Co-creator Mark Gatiss comments on whether a Sherlock movie may still be possible after the acclaimed BBC detective show ended six years ago.

Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Six years after the BBC show ended, Sherlock co-creator Mark Gatiss addresses whether a revival movie could happen. Based on the beloved character created by author Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock is created by Gatiss and co-creator Steven Moffat, first airing in 2010.

Now, six years after Sherlock ended, Gatiss comments on whether a movie might be on the cards in a recent interview with The Guardian. While expressing interest in the idea, the co-creator stresses just how hard it is to get movies off the ground these days. Check out Gatiss' full comment below: “People think you can just wave a wand. It’s incredibly difficult to get people interested and get films made. I remember talking to Edgar Wright about Ant-Man, into which he put eight years of his life and then didn’t make. Eight years is not short of a decade. Add a few of those up, you’re dead and you’ve made four films. But, also, we were genuinely interested in making them for TV because we love TV. We would love to make a Sherlock movie. It’s the natural thing to do.

Cumberbatch has now played Doctor Strange across a number of MCU films and Freeman's Everett Ross is also a staple of the Marvel film and TV world as well. Despite their success in the superhero realm, however, both actors have previously expressed an openness to reprise their roles under the right circumstances. For Cumberbatch's part, the actor told Esquire in 2021 that it's "too soon" to return just yet and that the series has "had its moment for now.

Freeman, on the other hand, stresses that returning for Sherlock season 5 or a movie could happen if the script is right and all the other major actors and creatives return as well. At this point, Freeman says a "one-off" is more likely than a full-fledged season 5. With both creators and both lead actors open to more Sherlock in the future, it certainly sounds like fans shouldn't totally shut the door on some kind of revival just yet.
