All political violence is tragic. But one of Japan’s leading politicians, Shinzo Abe, shot dead on the election trail? Not just shocking but virtually unthinkable until now.
Former Japanese prime minister Shinzo Abe was delivering a campaign speech in Nara before being shot.In 2011 Democratic congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head while meeting constituents in a supermarket parking lot; Republican congressman Steve Scalise was shot by a left-wing activist at a charity baseball game in 2017. Thankfully, both survived.
Abe, who served as prime minister from 2006 to 2007, and again from 2012 to 2020, was shot in clear daylight while giving a campaign speech in Nara ahead of upper house elections on Sunday. While no longer prime minister, Abe remained extremely influential in the ruling Liberal Democratic Party.
