Traditional owners of the 46,000-year-old Juukan Gorge destroyed by mining giant Rio Tinto lodge their submission to the parliamentary inquiry, saying the resources industry 'could not be relied on to attach true value to Aboriginal heritage'.

The traditional owners of the 46,000-year-old Juukan Gorge that was destroyed by mining giant Rio Tinto in May have lodged their submission to the Federal Parliamentary inquiry, labelling the destruction of the caves a "shocking act of corporate vandalism to our very sacred site".

The ancient rock shelters in WA's Pilbara region have evidence of human habitation dating back nearly 50,000 years and hold high cultural significance to the traditional owners. The PKKP people said in their submission that the WA Government could have done more to avoid the blasting. "Even with the limitations of existing laws, more rigorous and equitable implementation of the processes mandated by legislation could have ensured the protection of these critical heritage sites," PKKP Aboriginal Corporation chair John Ashburton said in the submission.

Treasurer hits back at Paul Keating's attack on the RBA | Sky News AustraliaTreasurer hits back at Paul Keating's attack on the RBA | Sky News AustraliaTreasurer Josh Frydenberg has hit back at controversial comments made by former Labor Prime Minister Paul Keating over decisions made by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) during the coronavirus pandemic. \n\nMr Keating accused the RBA of not doing enough to shoulder the economic load caused by the COVID-19, saying “as history has shown, when a real crisis is upon us the RBA is invariably late to the party'. \n\n“It has to be remembered; these are the high priests of the incremental. Making absolutely certain that not a bank toe will be put across the line of central bank orthodoxy,' he said. \n\nHowever, Mr Frydenberg said “this was an extraordinary unnecessary attack from Paul Keating”.\n\n“The Reserve Bank and its independence has come a long way since Paul Keating famously said, ‘he had them in the back pocket and they did what he said’,” the treasurer told Sky News.\n\n“The reality is the government is in charge of fiscal policy and the Reserve Bank is in charge of monetary policy.\n\n“We value the independence of the Reserve Bank,” he said. \n\nTreasurer Frydenberg also spruiked upcoming fiscal reforms which he said would save “thousands of businesses”.\n\n“We put in place some temporary relief for them with some changes around the insolvency laws and lifting the threshold for which there could be a statutory demand against them”.\n\n“What we’re doing now is putting in place a permanent change to build more flexibility into the system and to create more dynamism across the economy.' \n
