Quite the excuse
The owner of a shop which sold illegal, fake cigarettes to a 14-year-old customer tried to pretend they had been left there by a Romanian man.
The first incident happened in November when Lancashire County Council's Trading Standards officers sent a 14-year-old into the shop, on New Hall Lane. She was able to buy the age restricted product with no checks and it later transpired they were counterfeit, meaning that that there were no controls over their contents or safety.
After submitting a guilty plea on May 15, Mr Samen and his company were given fines and costs totalling £4,363 and magistrates also ordered the forfeiture and destruction of the 786 seized packs.
