It was not universally welcomed

Marks and Spencer customers have been left divided as the retail chain opted to remove plastic from its Christmas wrapping paper. The business confirmed that for the second year running no plastic will be used for its greeting cards, gift bags or wrapping paper, Birmingham Live reports.

A spokesperson for M&S said: "We've had fantastic feedback from customers and have carried out testing to make sure the labels on our wrapping paper rolls are easy to remove and do not cause damage." But some customers have been left unimpressed by the decision. One reviewer wrote: "Bought this wrapping paper with 5 peel me stickers which were very hard to remove and kept tearing and damaging the wrapping paper, this was to be a quick job now still trying to remove stickers. Wrapping paper design is lovely but first 20cm of paper will have to be cut off.

Responding to criticism on social media, the business said: "We have removed all the plastic from our entire Christmas roll wrap range this year. And to help ensure you still have the same M&S quality we have added an extra 15cm of paper to account for any paper damaged during the removal of stickers.

"So you have exactly the same amount of usable wrap as last year, we just use the extra wrap as protection." It came after a consumer wrote: "Started wrapping my Christmas presents this morning, using the wrapping paper I got from Marks & Spencer last month in Paris."
