There was an increased police presence Wednesday at Zion Benton Township High School after shots were fired the night before in a parking lot during a basketball game, Zion School District 126 officials said.

Officers were on patrol nearby and arrived “within moments,” police said. However, the shooter had fled before authorities responded. Police described the shooter as a male, dressed all in black, who fired a pistol numerous times before fleeing in a silver vehicle.

Zion police requested aid from other departments because of the number of people at the school for the game. The incident remains under investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact Zion police at 872-8000.“As a precautionary measure we will have an increased police presence, start our day on code yellow, and ensure emotional support services for students and staff,” the district said on its Facebook page.
