A change in pandemic management is going to be led from NSW and Victoria, not Canberra, says former deputy chief health medical officer, Nick Coatsworth.

Medical experts say Australia is too trammelled in complex politics to act boldly, like Denmark, which has become the first country in the European Union to remove all pandemic restrictions in one fell swoop.

“The only hope of us getting there before the election is if premiers [Daniel] Andrews and [Dominic] Perrottet take the lead, as they did with the return to school – Victoria and NSW are effectively leading the nation’s COVID-19 policies.”later this month, at least one internal border will remain closed, with no free movement between Western Australia and the rest of the country.

“It’s not apparent to me that the delay is being driven by relevant pandemic health advice. I don’t understand the rationale behind the delay. Our modelling shows no advantage in opening the borders in three months’ time,” he said.
