A reboot of Alien vs. Predator, one of the most profitable transmedia sci-fi crossovers ever, might just be the next big film that Disney is looking for.
This is the obvious reason. Shared universes have become Hollywood’s biggest fad ever since Iron Man teased an Avengers film back in 2008. Of course, only the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Legendary’s MonsterVerse have truly found success doing that, but everyone in town wants a piece of the cake. Even Lucasfilm, also part of Disney, is looking to connect a fair amount of their upcoming Star Wars live-action series by following Marvel’s formula.
As technology evolved, so did these games’ storytelling and worldbuilding efforts. And the same was happening on the comic book side of things; at some point, Alien vs. Predator grew beyond the original franchises’ borders and became its own universe – this gave birth to several stories that came up with scenarios that had almost nothing to do with the films they were inspired by.
