Montgomery County is moving forward with a $65,000 second phase study on its animal shelter to decide whether renovations or a new facility is needed after debating the need for the data.

“It’s a dilapidated, useless facility for an animal shelter,” said Precinct 3 Commissioner James Noack said. “I hate to spend $65,000 to get a report that is going to say it’s a piece of junk.”County Judge Mark Keough said the second phase is critical in providing hard numbers like square footage and cost to determine how the county will move forward renovations or a new facility.

The shelter has 180 kennels for medium to large dogs, however, Wysocki said the facility is chronically overcrowded and now has almost 300 dogs who need homes.Johnson has continued to pitch the need for a new shelter. During the county's budget workshops in 2021 and 2022, the court discussed the facility but said no funding was available.

“If we are able to do certain things to make it more adequate so it is safer for our employees, spreads less disease, germs and bacteria in the immediate future, I have to have this additional study from PGAL to know what to present during budget,” Keough said.
