Should the Raiders cut or trade Alex Leatherwood? FrontOffice33 | RaiderNation

being out with injuries. Leatherwood entered the offseason in a presumed battle for the right tackle starting job alongside Parker, but inconsistent play has hampered his chances. Leatherwood has worked with the Raiders’ third-team offense on occasion. There’s no need for the Raiders to drag out this experiment any longer.

Leatherwood’s poor play continues to force the Raiders’ hand. The No. 17 overall selection in the 2021 NFL Draft, Leatherwood was actually benched in Vegas’ Week 2 preseason game against the Miami Dolphins after a string of underwhelming snaps. It’s rare to witness a player be benched for performance issues in the preseason. Leatherwood has played into the second half of each of the Raiders’ two exhibition games, an indication that he’s firmly on the roster bubble.

Leatherwood was initially drafted to play right tackle but persistent struggles signaled that an in-season move inside to right guard was warranted. Leatherwood eventually graded out as the 80th-best guard out of 82, via Pro Football Focus. A move to guard was greenlighted because Leatherwood was even worse at tackle. It appropriately summarizes a fairly strenuous journey.

The chances of Leatherwood becoming an impact starter on Vegas’ offensive line have all but dwindled. Whether Leatherwood is a swing tackle or reserve guard also remains unclear. The Raiders have used the Pensacola, Florida native as a backup left tackle toat times. Salvaging that possibility would at least provide some value as a sixth-or-seventh offensive lineman, but we’re admittedly grasping at straws.

A competing franchise will always convince itself to give a prospect of Leatherwood’s pedigree a second opportunity. Leatherwood remains under contract at a controlled cost for the next three seasons. All parties involved require an immediate change of scenery. The Raiders should attempt to trade Leatherwood while he maintains a sliver of value.
