Organisers of the Brisbane show are taking steps to keep people safe when the Ekka returns for the first time in two years.

More than 300 handwashing stations are ready and organisers will pay closer attention to crowd numbers when the return of the Ekka coincides with the peak of Queensland’s third COVID-19 wave.

The Royal Queensland Show, commonly called the Ekka, was cancelled for a second year running in 2021 but is returning next month.“As expected, the COVID case numbers continue to climb and the peak of this current wave is not expected to be reached before the beginning of August,” he said.RNA chief executive Brendan Christou said there were no current restrictions to major events such as the Ekka but organisers were continuing to work with Queensland Health.

“At Ekka this year when buying a ticket online, you must nominate the day you’re coming. That way we can manage daily capacities and spread the crowds to ensure a great customer experience.“As we count down to Ekka, we will implement any Queensland Health regulations or measures, as required.”Further north, the Cairns and Hinterland Hospital and Health Service were warning Cairns Show-goers to stay COVID-safe after cases had almost doubled in two weeks.

“This is quite a concern because we are currently in our peak tourist season, with potential for the virus to spread rapidly and widely with the larger seasonal numbers of visitors in our region, particularly at large gatherings such as agricultural shows, festivals, concerts and markets,” he said.
