The Trailblazers avenged a previous loss to Etiwanda and advanced to the state finals for the fifth time in program history.
RANCHO CUCAMONGA — The Sierra Canyon girls basketball program is making its fifth trip to the state finals, and this one might be the sweetest.
Sierra Canyon , which was seeded third in the Southern California region, avenged one of its two previous losses by beating La Jolla Country Day on Saturday. Tuesday’s win over top-seeded Etiwanda avenged a 69-57 loss to Etiwanda in the CIF Southern Section final last month. This time, the Trailblazers opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take a 36-26 lead. The lead grew to as large as 14 points and Etiwanda never got closer than five points in the second half.Although Etiwanda didn’t have anyone foul out, star Kennedy Smith picked up her second, third and fourth fouls in the first three minutes of the third quarter, forcing her from the game and making the comeback that much more difficult.“I didn’t think we rebounded as well ,” Delus said.
