‘Significant’ Australian Open boost after LIV raid plan with fresh deal reportedly signed

The Australian Open golf tournament will have a “significant” prize money boost after interest from LIV Golf was rejected in favour of a new DP World Tour agreement.the primarily European-based circuit will continue its association with Australia’s biggest event after a deal was recently struck.

Join now and get your first month for just $1It comes after Golf Australia boss James Sutherland met with LIV Golf CEO Scott O’Neil at their Adelaide tournament back in February. LIV is fighting for survival thanks to the withdrawal of Saudi Arabia’s public investment fund and as part of its new plan, the organisation is looking to support national opens with additional prize money.

But instead the new deal with the DP World Tour will see prize money increased from 2027 onwards. It currently sits at $2 million.the deal is a three-year extension, running until at least 2029, and that the Australian Open was “near the top of their agenda” given the success of the Adelaide event.

The tournament earned a huge boost in interest last year, thanks to Masters champion Rory McIlroy’s attendance, with the back-to-back Augusta winner to return later this year.
